It is now established through extensive studies that these problems can be triggered by an uneven bite and the jaw muscles. It is easy to see how this could be: just place your hands on the side of your face and clench your teeth together – you can feel the large jaw muscles all the way up to your temples!
Many people have an imperfect or uneven bite, yet never have symptoms because they adjust to their problems. However, in others symptoms may appear. The type of problems you may notice:
TMJ (Temporo-mandibular joint connects lower jaw to upper jaw)
Clicking, grinding or pain in your jaw joints, difficulty opening wide or ringing in your ear.
Muscles
If your jaw is in the wrong position the muscles that move the jaw have to work a lot harder and can get tired. This leads to muscle spasm. The main symptoms include continual headaches (especially first thing in the morning when you have been grinding your teeth at night), pain in the neck and shoulders or pain behind the eyes.
Teeth and Gums
Teeth that are heavily worn, chipped, flattened. Repeatedly broken fillings and crowns. Loose teeth and receding gums. If these symptoms sound familiar to you, we may be able to help.
You are welcome to arrange a consultation where we can assess your bite, discuss your problems and the possible treatments.
